It was inspiring to play with and get to know everyone on the Salt Year CD Release tour this April. We stayed with lots of friends and played in some beautiful spots such as the Ramsdell Theater in Houghton, MI. A few highlights include playing (& dancing) at the New Good Works Collective in Traverse City, wading in the Grand Traverse Bay, saunaing at Graham’s family farmhouse, 12-passenger van sing-alongs and friend-infused crowds across the state! You can view tour photos, see photos and purchase a new album at Chris Bathgate’s new website.
A live Bridgehouse video session with Fiona Dickinson was recently posted from our trip to Keewanawesomefest this spring! I also did some recording and arranging work with my friends Elisabeth Pixley-Fink, Pat Carroll and Zach Boyt this May. I can’t wait to get back to Elisabeth’s musical project in July when I return to MI.
This May I caught a tenacious flu-bug at the end of a weekend tour with Kirtan artist Mike Cohen. I fought it off with ginger-garlic tonics just in time for the monthly Square Dance Kalamazoo event that I co-organize with the Celery City Sodbusters. We had a full house of dancers with people joining from the streets wondering what the seemingly-spontaneous hoedown was all about! Check out the next dance on Monday June 20!
I had fun putting in a kitchen garden with my mom during my time home this May. I've also begun a hunt for a new violin. While I haven’t made any big purchases, I developed my violin-palette with help from several fiddler-friends. (More stories to come about that soon…) My friend Bob Borscherding is loaning me one of his violins for the June tour, so I’m excited to give it a spin across the east coast this June.
Now I’m gearing up for North Carolina with John Hatton of Cleff’d Ear Productions at the Mt. Airy Fiddlers Convention! After this, the road gods will magically intersect me with Chris Bathgate & crew in Philly for his East Coast “Summer Solstice Tour”. If you have friends along our tour route, please let them know we’re passing through!
I'll be playing a few Michigan shows in late June/mid-July that I want to highlight because I’d love to see some of you there:
June 25, 2011 Detroit, MI, US, Chris Bathgate, Majestic Theater/the Magic Stick, 8 pm
June 30, 2011 Ann Arbor, MI, Chris Bathgate, Rackham Stage (Top Of The Park!) 8 pm
July 15, 2011 Ann Arbor, MI, US Chris Bathgate, The Ark, 8 pm
July 18, 2011 Kalamazoo, MI Square Dance Kalamazoo WSG Old Sledge! 8 pm
