This is the my first modern day troubadour report. I have yet to figure out how to link it directly to the be-all end-all Facebook. All in time... I'll be sharing soundscapes and photos here in the coming months. For those of you wondering what I've been up to, a few highlights:
Throughout college at WMU I studied Human Ecology, learning "here we go!" style by instigating folk life events and skill-shares. From Feb 09’ to Aug 10’, this culminated in an epic recall of skills when helping transition the President’s Sustainability Committee to a new Office For Sustainability at WMU. During this time I worked under the advisement of Dr. Harold Glasser, an exceptional mentor and friend. I also worked with a cross-section of students, staff and administrators, along with my former partner Matt Hollander who's kicking ass at the new Office!
After WMU’s Sustainability Fund Initiative victory, I decided it was time to take an opportunity to travel south and work with Cleff’d Ear Productions in order to immerse myself in one of my growing passions; the world of ethnomusicology and old time music & dance.
Here is a photo of a swimming hole in West Virginia with a group of friends I met at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV. I studied music & dance for a week there this summer and had an incredible time:
I wound back north last fall to work as a supporting musician and spend time with family outside Ann Arbor, MI. Since then, I've been learning and performing alongside a gamut of extraordinary artists. I've yet to blog about the last seven months of car-less trobadourism, but you can view photos and discover my collaborators under my About and Multimedia tabs.
Thanks to the artists who've schooled me and entrusted me with their music. Thanks to my friends & family for helping me get around, for inspiring me and for keeping me safe and supported during my travels.
CD Release of “Duende” by Fiona Dickinson
My friend and bandmate Fiona Dickinson released her debut CD this January! I've been playing and performing with Fio for 2 years now, and it's been a joy to witness her lightning-speed growth as a musician/performer. "The level of catharsis and convalescence in Fiona Dickinson’s music is astonishing." -DIT Kalamazoo.
Check out videos from the CD Release under my Multimedia tab. If you want to hear my classical-style violining preview "Winter's Coming" and "Sticks". If you'd like to hear some eery harmonies, check out "Recalling Dreams" and "Quiet With Others." However, I recommend listening all the way through and repeating. I also recommend purchasing rather than streaming her album. (Fiona is in good health now, but an unfortunate biking accident left her with some lofty medical bills.)
UPCOMING SHOW ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tomorrow (February 25) is my birthday, and the 2nd anniversary of funtime musictimes with my friend Elisabeth Pixley-Fink. Come celebrate with me and hear songs from her upcoming album!
